All You Need is Love. And a Very Hungry Caterpillar

There are some new things I'm learning as a mum of two. Like when to address which child when both are seeking my attention for instance (Poppy on potty yelling "I'm done now! Come wipe my bum bum!" versus Calla crying because she's tired and wants to have a nap and needs my help).

But then there are things that come quite naturally. Thank God for these things.

The little one and I have some just her-and-me time every day when the big girl is in school. Apart from the time spent napping/making her go down for a nap, we laugh together, we kiss, we snuggle, and just recently, we've started to read. Well technically, I read and she tries to grab the book. Which is good. It shows appreciation. And she was coo-ing throughout so I think we're in for some fun times.

I may not be the best cook, housekeeper, or disciplinarian, but when it comes to reading to my kids, I am automatically in my zone. I make voices, I make faces, I do actions, I tickle them, I make them laugh, I include them. And they love it. We read to Poppy everyday and very soon will for Calla as well.

Yes it's tough being a mum, and sometimes I don't do the best job. But all I need is a good book and my baby on my lap, or my big girl next to me, and I feel like the best mum in the world.

PS Does anyone out there have a Very Hungry Caterpillar book that isn't in shreds?  Not that I need it, no. I'm just curious because it's such a well-loved book and everyone I know who has one has it in more than one piece :) Ours has been put together by tape, glued, chewed on, spat upon, and still, we love it. I thought about getting a new one because this one looks well, really gross actually, but the book's got character, you gotta give it that :)

  1. I have the exact same book but it is a bit dog earred. It came with the caterpillar which my little girl loves playing with.

    1. Oh you have that version? Cool! Mine's the normal little board book. They have all kinds of sizes! We bought the huge one for my nephew, and I've also seen the buggy version.

    1. Ah that's cos my hand is holding the 2 pieces (back page has detached itself from the book so the butterfly has now split haha) very firmly. Wondering if I should get another one cos this one is really quite tattered! With teeth marks and missing corners!

    1. Same here! I love reading to the girls. And now it's so nice because Poppy is starting to read along with some books as well.

  4. Out VHC survived quite well because the earlier copies were from the library! (HAHA!) Having said that, the other titles - The very quiet cricket and The mixed up chameleon do look like they have seen better days. :)

I love the mum and kid reading moments too. :) Such bliss to have such moments with your girls Adora. :)

    1. Oh I have not tried those other 2 books! Our Lonely Firefly is in pristine condition though :P cos it was bought when Poppy was out of baby stage. We never bought Brown Bear but took it often from the library :D

  5. Ours has survived. You know, the big board one that you gave Declan on his I-can't-remember-which-age birthday? Then again, he didn't really like that book, I think he preferred brown bear. Well anyway, why don't I pass you my copy, but come to think of it, it is really huge and quite hard to manage with one hand. Let me know ok?

I'm on to the Young Readers Bible now with Declan and he really likes it. I think it complements quite well with his bible class in school. I get him to tell me bits of what he can remember from school and I guess the story then we read it again together. And the best part is, I get to refresh my own memory.

    1. My lovely mother in law has just ordered a copy for us and it's on its way! But sure, I don't mind having another copy because knowing us, it will end up getting eaten by my own little hungry caterpillars :)

PS it was for his 1 year old birthday!

Ah we're reading a small bible for kids as well, where every story is 3 paragraphs long :D
