Are you the typical kind of mum who thinks "Rain! Quick! Let's go home!" I am. It's funny because sometimes we're out and we rush home at the sight of a dark cloud. I am not a fan of umbrellas simply because they add weight to my bag, and juggling umbrella + bag + holding Poppy's hand while carrying Calla in a thunderstorm is not so fun. And, an umbrella that fits in my bag is not big enough to shelter all 3 of us. I'd need a golf umbrella for that. And that does not fit in my bag.
But sometimes, we're home and I look out the window and hope for rain. So that there will be puddles after, and I can bring her splashing in them. When she's properly equipped in rain boots and raincoat. But for the first time ever, I brought her out in a drizzle for a walk, not a splash.
It was just Pop and I, while Calla stayed home with Max. We took a leisurely stroll around our neighbourhood, each armed with her own umbrella. The rain was light enough for that. We got acquainted with the neighbourhood snails, looked at gushing water in the drains and sang rain-related songs.
I looked at Poppy often. The little girl with the red umbrella. And when she looked back, she'd smile. I would have missed those beautiful smiles if we hadn't gone out for that walk in the drizzle. It would have been a shame.
