Activities for Babies: Mess-free Painting

When Calla was about 6 months old, we experimented with messy home-made paints. I thought it might be fun to do a mess-free version one day at lunch. Simply because I needed something to keep her occupied while I fed her, and because I was tired of having to pick up toys and books and all kinds of stuff from the floor.

First, squeeze some paint into a little ziplock bag. Make sure it's sealed shut because the last thing you want is paint to be squirting everywhere. I also taped the sides down to the table to make it more secure. After a while, Calla made a game out of trying to remove the bag from the table.

I chose to add 2 colours so that it would be fun to see them mix. But I put a bit too much so they never quite got to blend into a nice shade of purple. It's also got a nice squishy texture for babies to play with.\\

With just the right amount of paint, you can also write on the bag and see your writing appear through the paint. An idea for older kids to practice writing the letters of the alphabet.

Of course when Poppy got back from school, she had to have a go too. I love how she never says "That's too babyish for me" but always wants to try out the things I do with Calla as well.

"Not like that, Jiejie!!!!"/

  1. This is brilliant!! Ah - perfect for the CNY time when the not-so-young are stuffing pineapple tarts and leaving Little One on her high chair with nothing to do.
