Encouraged by our introduction to fractions and estimates, we plunged into monster math with great excitement!
First I printed these monster parts for Poppy and stuck them on magnetic sheets. Then I invited her to play. She's really into her little white board for now ($1.80 from IKEA!) so I incorporated it into our session.
We began by sorting the monsters' different parts, then I asked her simple questions like "If one of the monsters has 3 legs, and another monster has 2 legs, how many legs would there be altogether?". So she would follow by putting the corresponding number of body parts on the monsters, and then write out the sum on her white board.
I decided to take it really slow and easy, so I capped everything at 10.
I'm so glad that she really enjoyed it. We ended off with a story about her funny monsters :) The whole session took no more than 15 minutes. The cutting of the magnets took half an hour!!
I forsee us expanding on this. Next up, subtractions! Wish us luck!
That's a great idea! And haha, totally identify about the prep part. Some days I would be cutting and laminating stuff, and it takes longer than how long we play with those learning aids!
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! Wish I was as hard working and resourceful as you when DinoBoy was younger. BUT *Yikes* Maths is not my fav subject kekee~ Well done!
ReplyDeleteYup! My preparation takes me hours but the deed is usually done within minutes! Love what you're doing at home with your kid! Thanks for the inspiration!
ReplyDeleteYah! It's takes me hours to prepare but the activities are usually done in minutes. :I
ReplyDeleteLove what you're doing at home- thanks for the inspiration! Ooo I was bad in primary school math but liked it more after I taught my son- it was like a 'oh now I see it!' moment. :D
hello! may i know where to get the magnetic sheet? THanks!
ReplyDeleteThanks everyone for your kind comments. It's a slow and easy start for me too so that I don't get scared off the math train haha
ReplyDeleteMy mother in law bought and brought the sheets from Canada, sorry! Maybe you can try giving shops like art friend or spotlight a call? If not, I'm sure a laminator+magnetic tape (Daiso sells this!) will work just as well
Enjoy monster math!
Hi,
ReplyDeleteIm thinking of getting the sheets from overseas (my friend stays there!). Which brand is good? I checked online - too many choices too many reviews!
Artfriend sells them but too expensive!
THanks much!!
Hello! I've only used Elmers and it's been great so far!
